Situation
Over several years, the German deep-tech scale-up has developed a cloud platform for monitoring and optimising digital twins of injection moulding machines. The platform provides blueprints of all relevant, common injection moulding machines that mirror real data from the machines running at customer sites. Existing and new machines are fitted with an internet-connected read-out kit that transmits data in real time to the virtual machine park – the twins. This makes it possible to detect faults early, identify deviations and, above all, simulate measures to optimise processes.
The company’s main target customers are large injection moulding machine manufacturers, who can integrate the digital twin service “ex works” into a large number of machines. Adapting the software to each customer’s requirements and integrating it into their various system landscapes takes a lot of time and attention – which the core development team cannot spare, as the platform is continuously developed further and extended, for example to other machine categories.
Team
A team of around six mostly experienced software engineers in development and quality assurance was set up to deliver and test customer-specific adaptations of the cloud platform and a wide range of often small-scale integration tasks. This noticeably relieves the core team that built the central code and keeps extending it – so technology development and commercial viability can move forward in parallel.
Operations
As the company still works in “start-up mode”, formal onboarding and training elements are neither available nor needed. The CTO and lead developer, who interviewed and assembled the team personally, introduces them to the platform, software and tasks. While the first implementation projects are closely supported, the team soon handles all tasks independently and routinely, so only special cases and specific detail questions need to be clarified. The core team that built the platform can focus fully on developing it further.
Target
With customer-specific implementation, the scale-up aims to reach certain economic metrics that open the way to a Series A round. The Indian team plays a significant part in reaching this goal. Once the funding – expected to be in the seven-figure range – is in place and many more OEMs, their machines and their customers can and must be integrated, the Indian team will be expanded significantly, towards 25 to 30 developers. As implementation expertise is one of the capabilities the deep-tech company must keep in house, taking over the entire team under the Build–Operate–Transfer model has already been agreed.
